Volumetric Hyper-Reality, A Computer Graphics Holy Grail for the 21st Century?

چکیده

This paper starts by examining the issues related to integrating real and virtual objects in a virtual reality environment. In particular it discusses the problems of occlusion, shadows and specular reflections. As an alternative to immersive virtual reality, this paper considers existing 3-D display technologies . It then discusses the limitations of these approaches and presents a thought experiment to design a completely general volumetric display. Such a displ ay would convincingly create the illusion of objects with arbitrary optical properties. A metallic object depicted using the display would reflect the visual surroundings of the display . Dielectric materials wo ul d show correct refraction and reflection effects. Light shone on the display would illuminate the virtual objects within it. When programmed to depict empty space, the display would, for all practical purposes, disappear, rendering the contained volume invisible. Incremental steps towards such a device are discussed.

The Sacred Heart and the Legend of the Holy Grail

In his article, “The Ancient Iconography of the Heart of Jesus”, Monsieur Charbonneau-Lassy very properly calls attention to the legend of the Holy Grail as being related to what might be called the “prehistory of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus”. The Grail legend was committed to writing in the twelfth century, though it is much anterior in its origins, as it is in reality a Christian adaptatio...

Taxing Sugar-Sweetened Beverages: Not a “Holy Grail” but a Cup at Least Half; Comment on “Food Taxes: A New Holy Grail?”

In this commentary, we argue for the implementation of a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax as a tool to help address the global obesity and diabetes epidemics. Consumption of SSBs has increased exponentially over the last several decades, a trend that has been an important contributor to the obesity and diabetes epidemics. Prior evidence demonstrates that a SSB tax will likely decrease SSB con...

Searching for the Holy Grail of scientific hydrology: Qt=H(S

Representative Elementary Watershed concepts provide a useful scale-independent framework for the representation of hydrological processes. The balance equations that underlie the concepts, however, require the definition of boundary flux closures that should be expected to be scale dependent. The relationship between internal state variables of an REW element and the boundary fluxes will be no...

Surgical Robots and Three- Dimensional Displays for Computer-Aided Surgery

Surgery in the 21st century will use advanced technologies such as surgical robots, three-dimensional medical imaging, computer graphics, computer simulation technology, and others. Three-dimensional medical imaging for surgical operations provides surgeons with advanced vision. A surgical robot provides surgeons with an advanced hand, but it is not a machine to perform the same action of a sur...
